La Universidad de los Andes (UNIANDES) is a private research university located in Bogotá, Colombia. It was founded on November 16th, 1948 as the first Colombian nonsectarian university. Its purpose being to provide a high-quality education that would help to close the knowledge gap between Colombia and the latest and most advanced scientific knowledge available in the world. The university is academically composed of ten schools and two special academic units: the School of Government Alberto Lleras Camargo and the Interdisciplinary Center for Development Studies. The university has 143 research groups, which are recognized by the Colombian National Administrative Department of Science. In Colombia, UNIANDES is the only private university that has received the “High Quality Institutional Accreditation” from the Ministry of Education of Colombia (MEC) for ten years, the maximum period of academic accreditation for universities in the country. UNIANDES has consistently been regarded as one of the best Colombian universities, one of the top 10 in Latin America and one of the top 300 worldwide according to both the QS World Top University Ranking and the Times Higher Education Classification. UNIANDES's infrastructure includes approximately 116 classrooms, 163 laboratories for teaching and research, a 600-person auditorium, two rooms for art exhibitions, 26 computer rooms, a sports center, a central library, and five satellite libraries (which are specialized by areas and in total contain more than 445,000 books).
The Nuevos Rumbos Corporation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the investigation and prevention of some problems of high social relevance such as drug use in adolescents and juvenile delinquency. Nuevos Rumbos is led by Dr. Augusto Pérez Gómez, who has 35 years of experience as a teacher, researcher and therapist. He is the author of 160 articles in magazines in Spanish, English, French and German, and 14 books. The team is composed of professionals from different disciplines: Psychology, Social work, Political Science, and Criminology and Communication. Nuevos Rumbos was created in Bogotá in October 2002 and since then has carried out numerous projects and publications in national and international journals, has published several books and has had contracts with entities such as the Pan American Health Organization, the Universities of New Jersey, Washington and Miami, CICAD / OAS, the Colombian Family Welfare Institute, among others.
The mission of Nuevos Rumbos is to strengthen the prevention of the consumption of psychoactive substances, juvenile delinquency and other socially relevant problems such as violence, teenage pregnancy and school dropouts. It proposes three basic objectives: 1) to develop programs and research projects that allow for a better understanding of the problems; 2) develop preventive programs and projects that avoid the expansion of problems; and 3) advise institutions and people in achieving the first two objectives. The researchers conduct qualitative and quantitative, epidemiological, experimental, correlational and descriptive research. They carry out trainings to the communities within the structure of the preventive system “Comunidades Que se Cuidan.”
