The PUCMM School of Health Sciences brings together the departments of Nursing, Medicine, Medical Technology and Physical Therapy. The Faculty of Health Sciences has laid the foundation for the development of research studies and international collaboration, and an agreement with PAHO has brought expertise from Latin America to the School. The nursing curriculum is based on the integration of diverse disciplinary content organized around a core of priority health issues. Basic science and nursing practice courses are integrated from the start. With a strong focus on community nursing, students work in the service of the Secretaría de Salud Pública y Asistencia Social (SESPAS; Secretariat of Public Health and Social Assistance). The Office of International Students coordinates international exchange programs with various institutions, including the University of Miami. Support services include assistance with housing, transportation, student visas, and translation of documents. Volunteer Student Support Groups help orient new students to DR, foster participation in cultural activities, motivate students to practice their Spanish, and guide them in visits to historical and ecological sites.
The PUCMM and UMSONHS have an established record of collaboration around scientific and educational activities to prepare tomorrow’s healthcare leaders and scientists. The international exchange agreement in place between the Schools aims to enhance students’ transcultural knowledge base and help them prepare for successful nursing education and research careers. Under this existing agreement, UMSONHS graduate and undergraduate nursing students travel to PUCMM for “mini-mester” experiences that provide them with perspectives on Dominican Republic healthcare system. UMSONGHS host medical students during two-week clinical experience at its International Academy for Clinical Simulation and Research.
